And, in colder months, batteries are more stressed to perform, stranding you during the worst possible time of year - when it is freezing cold. And at Towing Cincinnati we have seen more and more battery problem here in the last few years than ever before. Proper Way to Jump Start a Vehicle Battery
First, you will a good set of heavy duty jumper cables. If you don't have these cables, perhaps a neighbor or someone near where you are parked has a set you can use (plus you will need another car with a strong battery to jump your dead one). Put both vehicles in Park and turn off each car's ignition. Be extra safe, the depress the parking brake of each car, just to be on the cautious side. Attach the red clip of one end of the cable to the positive terminal (also marked in red) to the dead battery. The positive terminal of your battery will be label POS or + in red. Attach the other end of this cable with the corresponding red clip to the positive terminal of the car with the good battery. Now, at this same vehicle (the one with the good battery) attached the cable with the black clip to its battery. Attach the last black clip to an unfinished (unpainted) metal surface of the car with the bad battery (but not too near the battery itself). To jumpstart the car with the bad battery, start the car with the good battery and let it run for a few minutes - revving the engine of this car will produce more voltage and potentially further speed up the process. Just be careful not to over-rev the car. After a few minutes try to start the car with the bad battery. If it doesn't start, wait a few more minutes and try again. If it still doesn't start, the battery may be too old and dead to be jumped started. In this case, the only solution is the replace the dead battery.
